Why TastyKeish's Live Reading of The Comet Is Important

March 27, 2017

Keisha "TK" (TastyKeish) Dutes, half the voice of TK in the AM thought of an idea and then brought it to life on February 28.  In celebration of Black History and the 4th Anniversary of Bondfire Radio a special live event and reading of "The Comet" took place in Brooklyn, and it was important for many reasons.  For one, TastyKeish brought together the art of storytelling and radio, a nostalgic experience for many who enjoy and can appreciate the old school days of a theater experience through listening.  Two, TastyKeish was inspired to not only showcase a work by one of the most influential black writers and thinkers, W. E.B. Du Bois, but it was with the intent of producing and contributing black voices to the black audio drama spectrum where she noticed it was greatly lacking.  "I just loved audio stories and dramas but I was sad I couldn't hear my own voice.  That little accent, you know something that allows for you to identify with something right off the top," says TK.

The Comet is a science fiction short story, written by W. E. B. Du Bois in 1920. It discusses the relationship between Jim Davis and Julia after a comet hits New York and unleashes toxic gases that kill everyone except them.
