How To Use Light To Stay Focused

Have you ever fumbled through a dark room, searching high and low for a simple item that you are able to see with ease when you turn on the light? Without light, a simple task can become a challenge. In the light, however, scary shadows are revealed to be just furniture and fixtures. In cartoon imagery, great ideas are often represented by light bulbs or light bubbles. There is a basic universal understanding that light brings clarity to a situation.

We all have boring tasks to tackle, challenges in our homes and workplaces, and people that we find abrasive or difficult. When working through our daily goals it is easy to get sidetracked with things that upset us, the things that we do not want and the things that we fear. Yet, something as simple as a light can bring new meaning to our experience.

In my work as a Life Coach and Energy worker light is a large part of most of my sessions. It is used both symbolically as well as in energy work. First, I remind my clients about the impact of the sun in our daily lives. It is easy to get affected by lack of sunlight, to feel less motivated, tired or even melancholy. To demonstrate how light can immediately impact a situation, I suggest that my clients see their current issue as a visual image or picture. I ask them to close their eyes and imagine this image. Once they do, I ask them to imagine that the image is infused with light. We imagine light pouring into the picture. Almost every time I try this exercise, the image will change, usually in a positive direction.

Often, energy workers will talk about how we need to protect ourselves from the outside world. The world is a scary place filled with bad people and we need to put ourselves in a bubble to protect ourselves from them. By doing this their negative energy will bounce off of you and go back to them. In my own work that I do, I use a bubble of light, but for a very different reason. Energy is attractive. The world is full of all sorts of people and experiences, both good and bad. Your belief in and of itself is a force that attracts. If you put yourself in a bubble to keep the negative people away, you are in essence poised to attract negative people. Why? Because your point of focus creates an energy stream that has a force, a power of attraction. By trying to resist something, you are focused on it and therefore more attractive to it. The better approach is to think about what you want and put yourself in a bubble of energy that will attract what you want.

In energy work, the approach of using a bubble of light is called “shielding.” I like to think of it as making a decision about what you want and making it so vibrant and expressive that it becomes a bubble of light. I like to think of it as selective screening. You are in a bubble of light that glows with exactly what you want. Therefore you become like a lighthouse. That which should not come to you will avoid you and those things that should find you will know where you are. The bubble will act like a cell membrane. The cell membrane is not worried about bringing in the wrong items. It is just made so the right things can get in and the things that do not belong will stay out. If you think of shielding in this way you are not necessarily resisting what you do not want, but it is a natural outcome of selecting what you do want.

The beauty of working with light is that you do not have to buy anything, go anywhere or have a special tool to use it. It is available to you if you simply close your eyes. It only takes a few seconds and often in the course of a busy day all we have is a few seconds. Even if we do not have time to stop for lunch our body will get hungry. I use meal times or times of hunger as a natural time to practice reset or practice “light work.” We can use these segments of the day to remind ourselves of the bigger picture and to “reset” our energy. I suggest in the morning, right before breakfast, you close your eyes and set your intentions in light. It is a very simple exercise: Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Imagine there is a bubble of brilliant bright, white light above your head. Imagine that you can feel the warmth of the bubble above your head shining down on you. Imagine that a beam of white light comes down through the top of your head and floods into your body. See the white light come through your head and come into every cell of your body, from your head all the way to the tips of your toes. Imagine your body flooding with light. Imagine this light is very strong, vibrant and positive. See it flooding through your body and then pushing out of your body into a bubble of light that surrounds you. Imagine that the bubble gets brighter and brighter. Once if feels like it is glowing, state your intentions for the day. You can say things such as, “I will remain focused to finish _____. I will remain positive in all my affairs. I will create ________ today. I will think in creative and fun ways and the light will help my thoughts expand. I will focus on what I want today.” When you are finished focusing on what you want, you can open your eyes and continue on with your day.

Creating light in our energy field and continually resetting its flow and power is critical to managing your day in a positive and productive way. The shielding practice outlined in this article can help you preserve and re-energize that light.
